In the early hours of Saturday, reports emerged of significant explosions shaking the Iranian capital, amid statements from Israel that it had carried out a preemptive military action.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in the city on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, columns of thick smoke were observed rising over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The type of these blasts indicates that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet reported, though it did not immediately offer further details.
Context: Escalating Tensions and Recent Developments
This event occurs against a background of severely escalated strains in the region. Major events leading up to this attack involve:
- US Military Buildup: A significant buildup of US naval forces in the region, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent talks between the United States and Iran on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with suggestions of further discussions planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered threats regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had accused the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. They dismissed claims about missile development and casualty figures as unfounded.
These developments remains fluid, with further updates anticipated as events unfold.
