Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
