Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of millions of residents across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded rising waters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued 14 individuals stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and another who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended recently over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms stronger and common. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Scientists report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms result in an average of millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration last week because of the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
